Not illustrated. 1863 Excerpt: ...small in size, but highly interesting, especially the south door and the rose-window. But we will hasten on over the South Foreland to Walmer and Deal. This Foreland faces the south-east; and a lighthouse at such a point serves as a guide towards Dover harbour, and a warning against the Goodwin Sands (of which we shall have to speak presently). Starting from Dover, and winding up the steep road round the base of the castle-hill, we come first to the hollow known as Knights' Bottom, where tournaments were held in the old days by the barons and knights assembled in the castle; and then, at about 3 miles from Dover, a quiet road branches off to the right, leading to the two light-houses at the South Foreland. The upper light-house stands on a part of the cliff 340 feet above the level of the sea; the lower light-house is closer to the edge, at a little lower level, and rather further to the east. The electric light and the lime light have both been tried here in recent years. The upper light can be seen 25 miles off. North of the light-houses is the little village of St MargaretAt-cl1ffe; and half a mile inland is West Cl1ffe, both perched up at a great height, and exposed to the blasts of winter storms. St Margaret's has a fine old Norman church. Near at hand is the only gap in the cliff at this part; a steep path leads down to a tiny nook, called St Margaret's Bay, which has the reputation of yielding the finest lobsters in England--small but of exquisite flavour. From this bay the submarine electric cable to France starts. At about 3 WALMER CASTLE. 89 miles from St Margaret's we come to two villages, R1ngwold and K1ngsdown, the one inland and the other on the sea-shore.
